What is muslin?

Muslin is a loose weave fabric that's characterised by its delicate, breathable nature. Usually made from 100% cotton, it is considered one of the truest natural fibres around, although modern muslin fabrics can be blended with viscose or silk. Muslin is characterised by its delicate nature and smoothness which is why it’s used so frequently for babies.

Muslin is one of the oldest fabrics and is believed to have originated in India or the Middle East. It became a widely traded commodity in Europe and was extremely popular in France. It has a multitude of uses from quilting to cleaning to food production to medical uses and is often used in the fashion industry.

What's the difference between muslin & cotton muslin?

Muslin is the type (or weave of fabric) where-as cotton refers to the fibre. So cotton muslin is muslin fabric made from 100% cotton (compared to other styles of muslin which may be blended with silk or viscose (from bamboo). Cotton Muslin is made from the cotton plant and is popular worldwide.

Why is muslin so good for babies?

Open Weave Fabric - Muslin is an open weave fabric making it highly breathable & lightweight. It's these properties which make it perfect for babies who can't regulate their temperature well. Because it allows plenty of airflow, it's an ideal fabric for swaddling in summer or shading a pushchair or baby capsule.

Multi-purpose - Muslin is highly versatile and can be used for everything from wiping up spills (burp cloths) to shade covers / breastfeeding covers and swaddles. Muslin swaddles in particular can also be used well beyond the baby stage, with many women using muslin swaddles as a lightweight towel at the beach, sarongs, scarves and more. It can also be used to cover food on a table or for cooking (think straining a liquid or making cheese).

Stretchy - Whilst not as stretchy as a merino or stretchy wrap, high quality muslin such as Little Unicorn or Aden and Anais does have a little stretch due to muslin's characteristic open weave. This is what makes it so incredible for swaddling. You can wrap stretch the fabric and wrap it securely around baby whilst allowing airflow, regulating baby's temperature & keeping them comfy.

Long-Lasing - Muslin is a durable fabric and will easily outlast your baby or be passed on to siblings, or the babies of friends and family. Once you've finished using your muslins for swaddling / baby, they can be repurposed for food covers, as sarongs for the beach, cooking and more.

Absorbent - Muslin is highly absorbent, meaning it's good at keeping your baby dry. It also helps make muslin a practical option to use as a burp cloth, change pad cover or more.

Soft & gentle- Muslin is a soft, gentle fabric that will get softer and softer the more you wash it. A baby's skin is very delicate, so the buttery-soft properties of muslin is super-gentle on their skin.

What is Bamboo Muslin?

This is a muslin made from a blend of cotton and viscose from the bamboo plant. It is said to be even softer than traditional 100% cotton muslin.

How does muslin compare to cotton?

Muslin is most often made from 100% cotton, so when discussing this, we’re referring to a muslin swaddle and cotton stretchy swaddle for ease of comparison. The muslin swaddle will be lighter, more breathable and a lighter weight. It will be softer, more versatile & comfortable. True muslin is 100% cotton. The cotton swaddle will also be absorbent, breathable and durable, but is a heavier weight than the muslin. It is less versatile than muslin and will take longer to dry.

Is muslin better than merino?

Muslin & merino have many similarities in that they are both natural fibres, breathable and temperature regulating. This is why they are so good for babies. Merino is warmer than muslin, so is often used for layering in the coldest months, however a lightweight merino can also be used in summer, as newborn babies can't regulate their temperature. Muslin can also be used in the winter months, but will need more layering for warmth.

Muslin is a very absorbent fabric whilst merino will help to wick moisture away from the skin. Both fabrics can be machine washed (merino with care), however merino can't usually be tumble dried, though it does air-dry quickly. Always check your individual garments for washing instructions.

Merino is more commonly used than muslin for clothing & sleepwear such as zipsuits, singlets & bodysuits. Muslin is equally as popular as merino for baby blankets & is becoming more popular for sleeping bags, particularly in summer.

Can I use muslin in winter?

Absolutely! Because muslin is so renowned for it's light weight and breathability, it's often associated with use in summer only. However, it's a wonderful fabric to use year-round. It's absorbency makes it a practical fabric for burp cloths, change pad covers and more. It's lightweight nature means it's an ideal playmat to take when out & about - it won't add much weight or bulk to your nappy bag and you'll still have something for baby to lie on when visiting friends of relatives. For older babies & toddlers, muslin blankets or comforters are a lightweight option for bedding as they are breathable and can be layered for warmth in the coldest months.

Is muslin good for kids with eczema or sensitive skin?

Muslin is one of the best fabrics for eczema & sensitive skin because it's super smooth & soft. The open weave of this 100% natural fibre makes it breathable which reduces the risk of overheating, a key consideration with eczema in particular as overheating can make eczema worse. Because muslin is smooth to the touch, it won't catch on any patches of eczema or irritate it, so it's a super comfortable fabric for little babies with extra sensitive skin.

How to care for your muslin

Muslin is an easy-care fabric that will get softer with every wash as long as you take care to follow the washing instructions. In general, muslin can be machine washed on cold and tumble dried on low temperature. Always follow the washing instructions on your specific muslin garment and you can't go wrong!
