What exactly is a Peri Bottle?

What exactly is a Peri Bottle?

When you’re pregnant and planning for your first baby there’s usually a lot of anticipation and focus on the new arrival. However, it’s also important to think of yourself and your postpartum recovery as well.

Childbirth puts a lot of pressure on the area down there and your perineum can become swollen, stretched and uncomfortable postpartum, whether you’ve had stitches or not. Reducing this discomfort and soothing the area as soon as possible after birth is key to supporting your healing and recovering quickly, but it is often overlooked by new mamas.

Get organised before your bundle of joy arrives, so you have everything you need in your hospital bag, ready to go. There are several products that can help reduce postpartum discomfort, including perineal ice packs, sitz bath salts and tinctures such as Witch Hazel. Peri Bottles are another one of these often overlooked recovery essentials, but, what on earth are Peri Bottles and why do you need one?

So, what exactly is a Peri Bottle?

Peri Wash Bottles are essentially squirty bottles that have been ergonomically designed to allow you to easily and effectively cleanse & soothe your perineum whilst you’re on the toilet. They have been specially designed with an ergonomic angled spout allowing you to gently stream water over your perineum by giving the bottle a gentle squeeze.

Why would I use a Peri Bottle?

The perineum can be swollen, bruised and uncomfortable after birth. Using a Peri Wash bottle, particularly with a couple of drops of Witch Hazel can help reduce soreness & discomfort. It’s common for women to experience stinging when they wee postpartum and have discomfort when wiping, so using a Peri Wash Bottle can help dilute the urine with water and therefore reduce the stinging. They can also help keep the area clean and reduce infection.

What should I put in my Peri Bottle?

Peri bottles can be used with cooled boiled water alone or you can also choose to add a few drops of Witch Hazel with the cooled boiled water. Witch Hazel is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. Don’t add essential oils or lotions as these can irritate the area.

How often should I use the Peri Bottle?

It’s great to have a Peri Wash Bottle on-hand in your hospital bag so you can use it as soon as possible. Most women choose to use their Peri Bottle every time they use the toilet, however, it can be used as frequently as you need it. A Peri Bottle is most helpful in the first 1 to 2 weeks postpartum until swelling and bleeding have reduced.

What’s the difference between a Peri Bottle and a Peri Spray?

Perineal spray is a topical solution designed to help soothe your swollen and bruised perineum. Most peri sprays are ready to use with no preparation or mixing required. Peri Bottles are different because they are ergonomically designed to reach the perineum and can be used with cooled boiled water or your own solution (for example adding a few drops of Witch Hazel) as required.

Take control of your postpartum recovery before you’re busy enjoying your newborn snuggles. Add a peri wash bottle and witch hazel to your hospital bag, so you’re ready to go and can recover quicker.
